Valentine’s Day Gift Ideas - Say it with Hearts and Lights
Today you can express love through one symbol on your phone - the heart emoji. But where did the heart symbol come from? It turns out (after scanning many online articles and blogs) that the true origin of the heart shape as a symbol for love is not really known. The actual human heart shape only bears a small resemblance to the heart symbol. There are all sorts of links to ancient greek symbols on pottery, religious works of art and even an African plant in the 7th Century BC!
I also read that the heart symbol could come from the outline of a couple standing next to each other or holding hands. I would love it if it was really as simple as that.
My favourite explanation of how the heart symbol came to be is from a 15th Century painting showing a man holding a small red heart. It translates to ‘The Gift of the Heart’. This gives the symbol more emotion and was adopted as a symbol of romance in medieval courtly love.
