5 Ways to Style a Christmas Mantel

A mantelpiece is a wonderful place to have some fun with Christmas decorations. Unfortunately, I don't have one to decorate myself, so I've been gathering inspiration from some lovely interiors featuring my lights. From traditional greenery to bright colours and something a little more dramatic, here are five different approaches to Christmas mantel styling, including one I've dreamed up myself.

1. Natural & Gathered

Start with greenery. Gather a mixture of fir, ivy, eucalyptus or whatever you can find in the garden. Layer the branches loosely across the mantel, allowing some to trail over the edges. Weave fairy lights through the foliage and add a few pinecones or dried seed heads. Don't worry about making it symmetrical — the uneven shapes and textures are what make it interesting.

2. A Little Christmas Magic

Not every Christmas mantel needs to be covered in greenery. Try bending a string of fairy lights into a star shape or around a favourite plant or ornament. Add a few decorations at different heights, mixing old favourites with something new. Don't worry about everything matching – a slightly unexpected combination is often much more interesting.

3. Christmas with a Twist

Who says Christmas has to be red and green? A pale pink mantelpiece, colourful ornaments and a light-up Christmas slogan make a wonderfully cheerful combination. Start with the colours already in your room and choose decorations that work with them. Your Christmas decorations should feel at home with the rest of your interiors.

4. Dark Woodland

Bring a little of the outdoors inside. Branches, ivy and other natural finds make wonderful Christmas decorations (not everyone has a spare set of antlers lying around). Keeping the colours simple makes the arrangement feel more considered. Try winding a delicate string of fairy lights through the arrangement, following the natural shapes rather than wrapping everything too neatly. You don't need much – sometimes one interesting piece is enough to make a statement.

5. My Dream Christmas Mantel

A small confession: I don't actually have a mantelpiece, so clearly I've created this one with a little help from AI!

I've always loved the idea of a dark, dramatic fireplace piled high with greenery, ribbons and beautifully wrapped presents. So I decided to create my dream version, complete with my satin bow fairy lights and matching bow wreath.

If I ever get a mantelpiece of my own, this is exactly how I'd like to decorate it. Although I suspect the pile of presents might not look quite so perfectly arranged!
